STRONG WIND

Strong wind and gusts on Lake Como

The average wind speed alone can hide the most important part of the story. Gusts, direction and local exposure can change conditions quickly.

Mean wind versus gusts

Mean wind describes a period average; gusts represent short peaks. Large differences between the two indicate irregular conditions.

Direction matters

The same speed can have different effects depending on shoreline orientation, valley alignment and whether the wind blows along or across the lake.

Thunderstorm gusts

Convective outflows can produce sudden strong gusts that do not follow the normal local wind cycle.

Lake activities

Small boats, kayaks, SUPs and exposed shoreline activities require greater margins when gusts are strong or rapidly increasing.

Safety note

Como Lake Weather is an information service. For warnings, emergencies and safety decisions always consult Civil Protection, Regione Lombardia and the competent authorities.
