LOCAL WINDS

Breva and Tivano: the winds of Lake Como

Breva and Tivano are essential names for anyone who spends time on the Lario and help explain the daily wind cycle.

Tivano

Tivano is traditionally associated with the night and early morning and generally blows from the northern sector towards the south. It is linked to local thermal circulation between valleys, mountains and lake.

Breva

Breva tends to develop during the warmer part of the day, generally in the opposite direction. Daytime heating can make it particularly noticeable in the central and upper lake.

Why boaters care

A regular circulation may suit sailing and wind sports, but strong values or gusts require caution. Nearby thunderstorms and synoptic fronts can disrupt the normal Breva–Tivano cycle.

Safety note

Como Lake Weather is an information service. For warnings, emergencies and safety decisions always consult Civil Protection, Regione Lombardia and the competent authorities.
